NerdWallet, an online consumer advocate business, ranks Athens in the Top 20 for First-Time Homebuyers in Alabama. Athens ranked No. 20.

Earlier this year, out of 100 cities in the nation, NerdWallet ranked Athens No. 2 – behind Big Spring, Texas – for having a strong middle class. The middle class is rising in Athens and has a 46.9 percent share of the aggregate income in Athens, NerdWallet reported.
Representatives from NerdWallet visited Athens earlier this year to meet with the Mayor’s Office, Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce, Limestone County Economic Development Association and Spirit of Athens to learn more about the city and in particular, its resources for small businesses.
“Our citizens have known that Athens offers the strong attributes all communities need to thrive, which are public safety, jobs, education and quality of life,” Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said. “In recent years, we have started receiving state and national recognition. This is another example that shows our City Council, our employees, and our citizens work to make Athens a wonderful place to live.”
